Promotion
Promotion is one of the all important Four Ps, or, if you're an examiner, the Marketing Mix.
Promotion is all about letting people know about your business and products.
The main way we all know about is advertising, but there are other methods such as sponsorship and Public Relations.
The main way we all know about is advertising, but there are other methods such as sponsorship and Public Relations.
Advertising - Businesses will pay for adverts to be in many places, such as radio, TV, Billboards, Newspapers, Magaznes etc.
The key points for your exam are:
Sponsorship - Businesses will often sponsor sports stars or teams, in the hope that it makes their products look better. For example, Nike pay Ronaldo millions to wear their product, in the hope that we will think 'wow, Nike must be good because Ronaldo wears it'. What fools we are!
Public Relations is when a business tries to make themselves look good, without spending much money. Examples include Open Days, donations to Charities (using massive Cheques and getting their picture in the local paper!) and doing things for schools and kids (Tesco's Computers for School scheme, Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers).
The key points for your exam are:
- most advertising costs money - the bigger the potential audience, normally the more expensive the cost.
- advertising needs to be focused on your target market - advertise beer during football on TV, hair spray during Loose Women etc.
- Informative adverts are normally paid for by the government. They are merely to inform us about something, such as drink-driving etc.
- Persuasive adverts are the ones we see most - they are adverts that are trying to persuade us to buy something.
